Resumo

This investigation delves into the intricate dynamics between makeup companies and contemporary forms of slavery within the beauty industry. Despite the corporate social responsibility, numerous makeup enterprises find themselves entangled in supply chains characterized by exploitative labor practices. Employing interdisciplinary perspectives from business and human rights, the research seeks to unveil the mechanisms sustaining slavery in cosmetics production through qualitative research and a bibliographical and documents survey. The collaboration between the Sunday Times and Bachpan Bachao Andolan brought to light a distressing link between child labor in Indian mica mines and the global cosmetics industry, where children as young as six were discovered working for meager wages. Addressing modern slavery in the beauty industry presents challenges rooted in intricate supply chains and lower regulatory scrutiny, fostering unethical practices like forced labor and child exploitation. Major industries, such as L'Oréal and Estée Lauder, have already faced legal consequences for their involvement in such practices. The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, especially the second pillar, offer essential guidance on preventing human rights violations within enterprises. Thus, companies must adopt policies that respect human rights, establish due diligence to prevent and mitigate impacts on human rights, and take measures to remedy any negative consequences of their business activities. Santana asserts that the companies must take measures to understand, prevent, and address the negative effects that their activities may have on human rights, that is, to act with due diligence. These measures should be monitored by states to ensure the effective protection of human rights. In response to these pressing issues, it is imperative for makeup companies to proactively prioritize ethical sourcing, instill transparency throughout their supply chains via regular audits, and implement robust due diligence measures. This proactive approach is essential in upholding human rights and ethical standards, signaling a collective commitment to reform and accountability within the beauty industry. Only through concerted efforts and a transformative mindset can the industry move towards a more ethical, responsible, and humane future.
