With the advent of smart cities—a concept that integrates various types of infrastructure, including social, physical, technological (such as AI), and economic frameworks—the potential for economic growth and improved quality of life is significant. Smart cities connect society with essential infrastructure services through advanced technologies, thus boosting local economies. Smart cities are becoming increasingly prevalent in our daily lives, driven by continuous technological advancements. Numerous municipalities, regardless of their economic status, are adopting smart city initiatives. However, there is a substantial disparity in the level of technology used to enhance local communities' well-being, largely due to the varying amounts of investment. Unfortunately, this issue is underexplored in scholarly papers, most of which focus on demonstrating the benefits of smart city technologies. Nonetheless, the world is vast, and there are countries that may not afford such advancements. In addition to the funding gap, these regions also face challenges related to handling and security, as we are dealing with technology that is susceptible to hacking. If it is challenging enough for developed countries to address these issues, it is even more daunting for developing ones. Therefore, this is a crucial issue that must be addressed. Before implementing these innovations, a comprehensive plan of action is essential. Despite the greater challenges in implementing the concept of smart cities in these regions, it is urgently required, as it could be a compelling way to reduce social inequality and foster progress. Contrary to what might be assumed, smart city initiatives could significantly enhance the lives of the public. In summary, this paper emphasizes the importance of discussing the use of artificial intelligence in providing basic necessities that enable a dignified life for all. Additionally, it highlights that smart city technologies could offer solutions to many problems faced by impoverished areas. Both international and national governments have an essential role to play in this endeavor.
